BookNest

A clean, local-first reading experience

BookNest is designed to provide book lovers with a clean, fully control-focused interface for reading EPUBs and PDFs. Free from account requirements, cloud synchronization queues, or unnecessary trackers, BookNest prioritizes absolute reader privacy and customizable visual styles directly in your browser.

Core App Philosophies

Local-First Privacy

All reading materials, bookmarks, highlights, and annotations are saved inside the application's secure container, never leaving your device.

Seamless Customization

Adjust font spacing, choose typography palettes, switch layouts, and toggle custom dark/light modes designed to reduce eye strain.

Optimized Rendering

Powered by robust navigator engines to render high-fidelity graphics, rich texts, and complex book structures.

Intuitive Gestures

Tap and swipe controls configured specifically for one-handed operation and fluid page flipping.

2. Technical Stack

The app is developed with modern web standard libraries to guarantee visual stability, low-overhead resource consumption, and rapid page-loading transitions:

  • IndexedDB for massive local blob storage
  • ePub.js for EPUB parsing and pagination
  • Web Speech API for offline Text-to-Speech
  • Google Identity Services for zero-backend cloud syncing

3. Architecture & Concepts

From an architectural standpoint, BookNest combines a single-page layout with native Javascript views, separating UI presentations from data management layers.

Shared State Management

Data persistence is scoped to IndexedDB, enabling screens to communicate transitions instantaneously without server latency.

Position Tracking

Uses standardized EPUB CFI (Canonical Fragment Identifier) coordinates to persist and resume exact reading positions across restarts.

Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 17, 2026

Welcome to BookNest. I am committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring that your reading experience is secure, private, and entirely within your control.

1. Information I Collect

BookNest does not collect, transmit, or store any of your personal information on external servers.

This application is designed to be fully local-first. This means:

  • All imported book files are kept locally within your private browser storage sandbox (IndexedDB).
  • Reading statistics, progress metrics, highlights, notes, and collections are saved locally on your device.
  • The Google Drive integration strictly uses the official Google Identity Services popup; no credentials or tokens are saved to any backend database.

2. Permissions

To provide core reading functionalities, BookNest may request:

  • Storage Access / Media Files: Required to locate, scan, and import EPUB files from your device storage, and to save your reading database locally.
  • Google Drive Access (Optional): If you choose to sync cloud books, read-only access to your Google Drive is requested via a secure OAuth token strictly for downloading EPUB blobs.

3. Third-Party Services

I do not integrate third-party trackers, advertisements, or analytics engines in the core reading client. Your reading habits are kept strictly private on your device.

4. Changes to This Privacy Policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Since the application has no network connection back-ends to collect user contact info, please review this page periodically to verify current policies.
