BookNest

A clean, local-first reading experience

BookNest is designed to provide book lovers with a clean, fully control-focused interface for reading EPUBs and PDFs. Free from account requirements, cloud synchronization queues, or unnecessary trackers, BookNest prioritizes absolute reader privacy and customizable visual styles directly on Android devices.

Core App Philosophies

Local-First Privacy

All reading materials, bookmarks, highlights, and annotations are saved inside the application's secure container, never leaving your device.

Seamless Customization

Adjust font spacing, choose typography palettes, switch layouts, and toggle custom dark/light modes designed to reduce eye strain.

Optimized Rendering

Powered by the robust, open-source Readium navigator engine to render high-fidelity graphics, rich texts, and complex PDF structures.

Intuitive Gestures

Tap and swipe controls configured specifically for one-handed operation and fluid page flipping.

2. Technical Stack

The app is developed with modern Android standard libraries to guarantee visual stability, low-overhead resource consumption, and rapid page-loading transitions:

Kotlin
Jetpack Compose
Material 3
Jetpack Navigation
Room (SQLite)
Readium SDK
Coil Image Loading
WorkManager

3. Architecture & Concepts

From an architectural standpoint, BookNest combines a single-activity layout with Jetpack Compose views, separating UI presentations from data management layers.

Shared State Management

Scoping key data ViewModels to the core navigation graph enables screens (such as the main book library and the active reader) to communicate transitions instantaneously without database latency.

Standard Protocol Routing

Supports system-wide file intents. Opening compatible files from external managers or internet downloads routes execution path directly into the reader container.

Position Tracking

Uses standardized schema coordinates to persist and resume exact reading coordinates within books, supporting accurate locator structures across app restarts.
